Day 1 // Faith is The Ability to Trust God

MATTHEW 14:22-32

Immediately after this, Jesus insisted that his disciples get back into the boat and cross to the other side of the lake, while he sent the people home. After sending them home, he went up into the hills by himself to pray. Night fell while he was there alone. Meanwhile, the disciples were in trouble far away from land, for a strong wind had risen, and they were fighting heavy waves. About three o’clock in the morning Jesus came toward them, walking on the water. When the disciples saw him walking on the water, they were terrified. In their fear, they cried out, “It’s a ghost!” But Jesus spoke to them at once. “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “Take courage. I am here!” Then Peter called to him, “Lord, if it’s really you, tell me to come to you, walking on the water.” “Yes, come,” Jesus said. So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. “Save me, Lord!” he shouted. Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him. “You have so little faith,” Jesus said. “Why did you doubt me?” When they climbed back into the boat, the wind stopped.

HEBREWS 11:1

Faith shows the reality of what we hope for; it is the evidence of things we cannot see.

The book, A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens, opens with the famous quote “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times”. Often taking a step of faith can be just that, it can be both exciting and scary. In Matthew 14:22-32, we read about Peter taking a step of faith that concluded with him walking on water. Faith brings our hopes into reality and becomes the foundation needed to acquire the things we long for. Faith is the confidence that God will do what He said and in this case, faith is seen in Peter’s ability to walk on water on the back of trust. Peter was able to walk on a platform where others sink simply because he had faith and trusted God.

The goal of these five devotionals is to encourage you and help you to be a person of faith capable of ‘walking on water’ like Peter did – doing things that naturally seem impossible. As you take steps of faith, may your relationship with Christ go to the next level.

PRAYER:

Lord help me to become a person of faith.

Help me to trust in You with all my heart and my understanding.

Day 2 // Faith is Knowing that Jesus is Always There

MATTHEW 14:24-27

Meanwhile, the disciples were in trouble far away from land, for a strong wind had risen, and they were fighting heavy waves. About three o’clock in the morning Jesus came toward them, walking on the water. When the disciples saw him walking on the water, they were terrified. In their fear, they cried out, “It’s a ghost!” But Jesus spoke to them at once. “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “Take courage. I am here!”

MATTHEW 28:19-20

Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

The story of Peter walking on water starts with the disciples on their journey from one place to another place. And there at sea, in the middle of their journey, we learn that they are in trouble far away from land and fighting heavy waves because of a storm. Yet, in the midst of their worry and anxiety, Jesus appeared walking on water. Jesus did not just walk on the water, but Jesus was right there in the midst of their situation.

Often, we lose hope and faith, because we do not recognize or see Jesus in the middle of our troubles. However, the reality is that even though we are not aware of it, Jesus is always there in the middle of whatever is going on in our lives

No matter what our current situation may be, let’s be encouraged that Jesus is always there. He is always close by, whether we know it or not. He has promised that He will never leave or forsake us. As people of faith, it is important to remember that Jesus is there always at our side and it is the knowledge that He is always there that helps us trust in God and take steps of faith.

PRAYER

Lord help me to be aware that You are always by my side.

Help me to recognize Your presence in the midst of my situation

and know that I am always in Your hands.

Day 3 // Faith Requires Prayer

MATTHEW 14:28-29

Then Peter called to him, “Lord, if it’s really you, tell me to come to you, walking on the water.” “Yes, come,” Jesus said. So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus.

JAMES 4:2-3

You want what you don’t have, so you scheme and kill to get it. You are jealous of what others have, but you can’t get it, so you fight and wage war to take it away from them. Yet you don’t have what you want because you don’t ask God for it. And even when you ask, you don’t get it because your motives are all wrong—you want only what will give you pleasure.

Prayer is the activity of asking and requesting things of God. When Peter asked Jesus the question “Lord, if it’s really you, tell me to come to you, walking on the water”. He was in essence praying - Lord enable me to walk on water. Peter was smart enough to pray, but he was bold in what he prayed for. It was Peter’s prayer that Jesus responded to when He said ‘Yes, come’. Peter’s prayer opened the door to the miracle of walking on water, and caused faith to rise in Peter’s heart to believe for it.

Simply put, faith people are praying people. When it comes to prayer, we need to be as bold as lions, boldly entering into the throne of grace, and asking big audacious things from God. We need to ask for specific things so that we can see specific results. Peter was just a person like us and was full of faith because he prayed. Faith people are praying people and people who pray become people of faith. Let’s keep praying and never give up.

PRAYER

Lord give me a passion to pray and seek Your face. Help me to be aware that my prayers have power and that they can change the situations around me.

Day 4 // Faith Comes Through God’s Voice

MATTHEW 14:27-29

But Jesus spoke to them at once.

ROMANS 10:17

So faith comes from hearing, that is, hearing the Good News about Christ.

NUMBERS 23:19

God is not a man, so he does not lie. He is not human, so he does not change his mind. Has he ever spoken and failed to act? Has he ever promised and not carried it through?

Peter was able to take the step of faith that resulted in him walking on water because he heard the voice of Jesus. It was the words of Jesus that stirred Peter’s faith. Without hearing the voice of Jesus, Peter would not have been able to fully put his trust in God. Our ability to do the impossible, like ‘walking on water’ comes from our ability to hear God’s voice.

There are a few ways to hear God’s voice; meditating on His Word, spending time in worship, prophetic words given to us through others and the still small voice of the Holy Spirit. The key thing to understand is that our steps of faith should always be based on what God is saying to us not on our feelings, ideas or emotions. Rather, faith is based on God’s voice and His word.

Before taking any steps of faith, let’s make sure that we have heard the voice of God. And once we have heard His voice, we need to ensure that we take Him at His word. Even Abraham the ‘Father of faith’ heard the voice of God, and as a result, had faith to believe for the promised child. Whatever you are believing for, hold on to the promises of God, through His word, knowing that God is not a man that He should lie.

PRAYER

Lord help me to hear Your voice.

Help me to recognize Your voice and believe that You will do what You have promised.

Day 5 // Faith Requires Obedience & Courage

MATTHEW 14:28-29

Then Peter called to him, “Lord, if it’s really you, tell me to come to you, walking on the water.” “Yes, come,” Jesus said. So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus.

PHILIPPIANS 2:7-10

Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave [c] and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form,he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross. Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honour and gave him the name above all other names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,in heaven and on earth and under the earth.

JOSHUA 1:6-7

“Be strong and courageous, for you are the one who will lead these people to possess all the land I swore to their ancestors I would give them. Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the instructions Moses gave you. Do not deviate from them, turning either to the right or to the left. Then you will be successful in everything you do.

We’ve heard it said before that faith is spelt R-I-S-K and it is completely true. However, faith can also be spelt as O-B-E-D-I-E-N-C-E. Peter heard the voice of Jesus to come, he obeyed and went to Jesus. It was his obedience to the leading of Jesus that allowed him to do the impossible. Our trust and faith in God is demonstrated in our obedience to His voice and word to us. People of faith, are obedient to God, they count the cost, they weigh up the risk but still obey. It is not that they are not scared to act but rather than allow their fear to stop them, they apply courage and obey God anyhow. Was it scary to take the first step on the water, you betcha, but Peter did it scared. We all desire to be obedient to God but the real question is, are we willing to be strong and courageous so that we are able to obey. Faith always requires our obedience and courage.

PRAYER

Lord help me to obey You even when it seems difficult. Give me the courage to take the actions that are necessary to see Your word come to past in my life.
