A 5-day devotional by Christine Williamson

Introduction: It’s been too easy over the past seven months to allow our minds to be consumed with the news. So how do we combat this especially as we move into this winter season? There are many stories in the Bible of people who faced incredibly challenging situations and yet maintained their focus on a God who could see them through. What was their secret? I think that one of their secrets was to STOP – CONSIDER – STAND IN AWE. This week I would encourage you to do the same.

Day 1 // STAND IN AWE OF GOD’S CREATION

Psalm 19:1 “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the works of his hands.”

Psalm 8:3 “When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars which you have set in place...”

During this COVID season I have spent more time walking and discovering the hidden gems of creation within a short radius of my home – even in my garden spending time watching the birds, the squirrels and the sunsets. We serve a God who has given us so much to enjoy and yet we are often too busy to notice. STOP – CONSIDER – STAND IN AWE this week as you observe His creation even in the beautiful changing colours of this autumn.

“What is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him?” Psalm 8:4

I’m reminded of the old song – use it as a prayer today:

Oh Lord my God when I in awesome wonder,

Consider all the works thy hands have made.

I see the stars, I hear the mighty thunder

Thy power throughout the universe displayed.

Then sings my soul my Saviour God to Thee

How great thou art!

Day 2 // I STAND IN AWE OF GOD’S WORD

Psalm 119:161 “...my heart stands in awe of your Word.” (NKJV)

I learnt to read God’s Word very early on in my life, at my mother’s lap, but never has it held so much power for me as in the past year. I stand in awe of:-

  • the way it can speak into my situation so powerfully.

  • the way the Lord can speak to me through His word for someone else’s situation.

Psalm 119’s overall theme is God’s Word – perhaps today take some time to STOP – CONSIDER – STAND IN AWE of His Word by reading through this Psalm. And also remember, He is speaking to you! Record today what He is saying. Ask God, as you read it to give you something for someone else you will speak to over the next few days and be amazed!

“Your Word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.” Psalm 119:105

Day 3 // STAND IN AWE OF A GOD WHO WOULD SEND HIS SON IN YOUR PLACE

As we read on Monday: “What is man that you are mindful of him?” Psalm 8:4

God has been mindful of you from before you were born: “I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb.” Jeremiah 1:5 Sometimes this thought can be scary when we consider all the times we have messed up BUT today let us focus on the fact that God loved us so much they he never intended to leave us in our mess but sent his one and only Son to redeem us!

STOP – CONSIDER – STAND IN AWE of the most famous verse in the Bible today: “For God so loved the world (that includes everyone of us!) that He gave His one and only Son that whoever believes on Him will never perish but have everlasting life.” John 3:16 And the news gets better and better: “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus!” Romans 8:1

As you STAND IN AWE of the grace of God today sing “Amazing Grace” to yourself and be thankful.

----------------------------------------------

Day 4 // STAND IN AWE OF THE FACT THAT GOD’S WAYS ARE HIGHER THAN YOUR WAYS.

Isaiah 55:9 “As the heavens are higher than the earth so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

Perhaps more than at any time in our lives it is important for us to STOP – CONSIDER – STAND IN AWE. I wonder what historians will be writing in a hundred years’ time about 2020? We have no idea what God is up to, but He is definitely doing something which down the road may well take our breath away. As we look back on the history of pandemics in our world over the past two thousand years God has always been at work drawing people to Himself.

Perhaps today ask yourself – ‘What is God doing in my life in this season? What does God want to do in my family’s life and my neighbours’ lives? What does God want to do in the life of our nation?’ And remember when you are concerned and worried that the Psalmist says: “You chart the path ahead of me”Psalm 139:3

Day 5 // I STAND IN AWE OF A GOD WHO IS STILL PERFORMING MIRACLES TODAY

“For with God, nothing shall be impossible.” Luke 1:37

The history of our church from its beginnings in 1927 are filled with stories of the miraculous! Pretty much every 10 years there has been an outstanding miracle of God’s healing. As I reflect on this I today STOP – CONSIDER – STAND IN AWE. From a lady in the final stages of cancer in the early days of the church’s history to baby Eva only given hours to live almost three years ago who is now thriving and the healing of two of our church congregation from serious COVID this year we have been blessed to watch God’s amazing power at work.

Today if you are believing for a miracle be encouraged by the stories in the Bible and the stories of our church history and STAND IN AWE of a God who cares so much that he is listening to every cry from your lips today.

As we conclude our devotions for this week:

What about you?  What makes you STAND IN AWE of God and his works?

  • Do you STAND IN AWE of His creation?

  • Do you STAND IN AWE OF His Word and let it speak to you daily?

  • Do you STAND IN AWE of the amazing grace that has saved you?

  • Do you STAND IN AWE of the way God has guided your life?

  • Do you STAND IN AWE of his miracles?

Take a step back and say with me “How awesome are your deeds...how awesome your works on man’s behalf.”
