Day 1 // I AM

John 14:6

I am the way, the truth and the life

There is no doubt we live in a complex world. Sometimes we can think that the answers to our problems must be equally complex and hard to implement. We can even simply miss the answer sometimes because it does not fit what we think it should look like. This verse reminds us of an incredibly simple solution, should we wish to take it. Three letters – it can’t be that simple! Wherever you find yourself today Jesus says, “I am”. What does this mean? It means that He exists – in your pain, He exists - in your confusion, He exists - in your fear, He exists – in your _______  (you fill in the blank - any blank).

Notice also, this is written in the present tense. There is no distinction of past, present or future with God – He is with you nowin whatever you are going through. Some of us currently find ourselves with a bit more time on our hands.

Perhaps this is the time to practice God’s instruction and “be still and know that I AM God”. It is still down to us, however, to do it and believe that a solution can be that simple.

Day 2 // I AM THE WAY

John 14:6

I am the way, the truth and the life

We often quote this verse when we are inviting someone to follow Christ and become a Christian. But what we are really doing in that situation is asking them to get onthe way. If we are following our sat nav, or even map(!), the way is still the way whether we are one mile from home or ten feet from our destination. No matter how long we have been a Christian, Jesus is still the way. I need to confess that I am far too reliant on my sat nav to arrive at my destination but do we think it is possible to be too reliant on Christ?

Paul reminds us in Ephesians 6v6 that we are “slaves of Christ”. As such we should be looking to our master for our instruction, direction and provision. Wherever you find yourself today and whatever stage of your Christian walk you are on, let us remember that Jesus is still the way and we can trust Him to give us accurate and reliable direction.

Day 3 // I AM THE TRUTH

John 14:6

I am the way, the truth and the life

On 10th September 2019 “Fake news” was officially added to the Oxford English Dictionary. (Unless this is fake!). We are currently hearing various stories about a leader in North Korea and Coronavirus has thrown up quite a number of “interesting” stories. We also only have to get on the internet to find out anything about anything. No matter what point of view we may hold or what crazy idea we can think of, we can probably find someone who agrees with us! Most of these stories are just funny but a few have the potential for harm. The damage external ideas can do, however, fades into insignificance when compared to the damage of internal fake news. These are the ideas and stories that we are believing about ourselves and carrying around with us. Jesus was clear – He is the truth and He also said the truth will set us free.

When our internal commentary says we are not good enough or there is a problem with us or we are not loved or cannot be forgiven, we need to understand that this is not the truth and can be labelled as fake. It may even be that some of us carry around whole newspapers of fake news and we read them every day! Let’s be clear – we must only believe what GOD SAYS ABOUT US. We know that this is true and we can trust it. The convenient thing is that God wrote it all down in a book called the Bible. We are loved, we are created in His image, we can be forgiven, we can have a great life – when we start believing the truth, then we really will be free.

Day 4 // I AM THE LIFE

John 14:6

I am the way, the truth and the life

Sometimes the focus of Christianity can be all about the life to come when our earthly life comes to an end. It is noticeable; however, that although Jesus did talk about heaven, a massive bulk of his teaching was regarding living on earth, in the here and now. He commented upon what the life of a Christian should look like and even equated it to living in a separate kingdom – the Kingdom of God. The apostle Paul expands on this and describes that to be a Christian is to be “in Christ”.

Jesus also shocked His hearers when He said, “unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you”. This was abhorrent to His audience, but He was saying that unless you take me into yourself as your sustenance and source of nourishment and strength, you really don’t have a lot to draw upon. The great thing is, however, that we can have Jesus living inside of us through the Holy Spirit. By allowing Him in we do truly experience abundant life.

Day 5

John 14:6

I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me

Pretty exclusive eh!  Also pretty simple!   I think this verse reminds us of the gold that we are carrying around. We all have a message and if we do not pass it on who will? You know I trained as a scientist and one of the beauties of many scientific theories is their simplicity. Also, history shows us that when the human race has been subjected to disease or plague, we have found an answer. This will also be the case with the current situation we are going through.

It reminds us, however, that we have the answer to the biggest question humanity faces – “why are we here?”.  As a Christian you are walking around with the answer and also with the vaccine that can help bring healing to many issues that people face. The question is, will we share it? In 1928 Sir Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin – a drug that has saved millions of lives. It is a good job he did not keep it to himself.
